What does Sports Specific Training Really Mean? Why we train the athlete first and sport second!

A properly educated strength and conditioning coach will conduct a needs analysis with every athlete through various methods. The back bone to this is the SAID principle (Specific Adaptations to Imposed Demands). During a needs analysis we brake down the athletes movement, how often they participate in the sport, the energy demands of the sport, and what injuries are most common to the sport the athlete participate in. 

Through a movement screen we can address limitations the athlete may have. For example limited dorsiflexion can hinder the athletes knee, or affect running mechanics that will slow the athlete down. Weak hamstrings can leave an athlete more susceptible to ACL injuries. Limited thoracic mobility can affect a throwing motion. 

Having athletes participate in a general athletic development program, like the Parisi Program, is the movement patterns are varied and different more so than seen in any one particular sport. It may seem paradox to think that using muscles or movements not seen in a sport will make someone better in the sport, but this is something which has proven true time and time again. If the athlete is playing a sport year round they are exposed to the same movement patterns over and over again. This focus on the same movements leaves the athlete with imbalances, impaired joint stability, and not achieving his/her fullest potential. This is when we have the athlete do movements they normally don’t do on the field to create the needed muscle balance and joint stability. 

Energy System Development may be the most specific to the athletes sport. This is another way of saying conditioning. Most sports overlap in energy systems but it is important to know which is the most dominant and how to train. We will look at this topic in more detail in the future.
